Giovanni earned a PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA, USA). He completed his post-doctoral work at Cancer Research UK in London. Subsequently, he established his own research group at the Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology, University College London (UK) as a Royal Society Research Fellow.
In 2012, Giovanni joined the Paediatric Medicines Office at the European Medicines Agency. He is responsible for assessing and overseeing Paediatric Investigation Plan applications for medicines in advanced therapy and paediatric oncology. Additionally, Giovanni serves as the paediatric representative for Priority Medicines (PRIME) products and manages the interactions between the Paediatric Committee (PDCO), the Committee of Advanced Therapies (CAT) and the Scientific Advice Working Party (SAWP).
