Description: This session explores the role and functioning of various AI testbeds in the development and conformity assessment of AI-enabled medical devices, specifically:

1. Union AI Testing Support Structures (aka Union Testing Facilities in AI) intended to provide technical and scientific advice to regulatory bodies following AIA Art. 84. NoLeFa was selected to prototype the structure(s) during a two-year pilot.
2. AI Testing and Experimentation Facilities like TEF-Health offer large-scale, in-depth testing through user-friendly interfaces and secure environments.
3. Notified body AI test infrastructures that are needed to meet direct testing obligations under AIA Art. 31(9) and Annex VII, point 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to distinguish the various types of AI testbeds: Union AI Testing Support Structures, TEF-Health, and Notified Body testing infrastructure
  • Understand the AI testbed focus and functioning and their role in the AI testing landscape
  • Gain insights into how testbeds can overlap with regulatory sandboxes, advance regulatory science, and inform standardization.
